English Premier League: Harry Maguire tipped for long-term Manchester United captaincy.

Ashley Young remains the club captain, but in his absence, Harry Maguire was appointed to lead the team in the 3-1 win against Brighton. Maguire was selected ahead of David de Gea, thanks to the former’s leadership qualities in the Red Devils dressing room.

Maguire, 26, led United for the first time in the Europa League group stage win over Partizan Belgrade in the absence of Young and David de Gea.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is most satisfied with Maguire’s leadership traits.

"Harry is captain material, so is David," Solskjaer said. "David's been here and done it many, many times, but Harry's come in and been excellent in the dressing room and on the pitch and that was the decision. But he can become a long-term one," said Solskjaer.

Maguire recently committed to a six-year deal - which also includes a plus-one option. He joined Manchester United in August this year from Leicester for £80 million. This value makes the England national team player the most expensive defender in the world. He surpassed the Virgil van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton at a price of £75 million in January 2018.

In addition, he also became the most expensive recruitment of Manchester United in the transfer market. Until now, Paul Pogba is still the most expensive purchase of the Red Devils.

Harry Maguire is the third signing of Manchester United this season. Previously, the Red Devils brought Daniel James from Swansea City and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace.

Maguire signed a contract with Manchester United until 30 June 2025. He wears the number 5 jersey which was previously worn by Rio Ferdinand.

In the win against Brighton, Manchester United scored three goals at Old Trafford for the second time in 72 hours.

They scored two goals in the first half and one in the second half as in the victory against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League last Thursday night.

Andreas Pereira's opener and a goal by Davy Propper (Brighton) brought a comfortable lead for Manchester United's team and fans, with Solskjaer's men dominating the first period.

Lewis Dunk failed to derail the Reds, who immediately took over when Marcus Rashford scored two minutes after Brighton's response.

Manchester United has risen to seventh with this first Premier League win at Old Trafford since winning against Leicester last September.
