Spanish La Liga: Out of favour Ivan Rakitic excluded from Barcelona friendly.
Pushed for the exit this summer by Barcelona, Ivan Rakitic finally stayed. However, his situation remains delicate, he is a mere replacement and often has to be content with crumbs.
While the international break is ongoing, some players have had to give up the chance of representing their country at meetings for qualifying for Euro 2020. This is the case of Rakitic who is forced to stay in Barcelona.
But the season arrives at a difficult point where the physical ones are put to the test. Indeed, with the sequence of league games, Champions League and qualification to the Euro, many players are paying for this crazy calendar. After Jordi Alba and Nelson Semedo, Rakitic is the next to pay the price.
The Croatian had been hoping to have more playtime with the Catalan team and yet it will not be for this time. Indeed, Barca has just announced his injury to the Achilles tendon. Rakitic will not play in the friendly against Cartagena tomorrow.
"I'm sorry I cannot help the team, but I'm confident that my team-mates will also succeed without me - they beat Slovakia in the first match, without me, and I think they'll do it now in Rijeka. will be with them with all my heart, " said Rakitic.
The Achilles tendon inflammation suffered by Rakitic requires at least a week's management, as explained by Mundo Deportivo. It remains to be seen, if this absence will not be prolonged and if it will not impact the Barcelona workforce already much weakened.
After some good times since joining the Blaugrana in 2014,
Rakitic had been beset by continued speculation that he is set to leave the Camp Nou.
He has played his part in helping Barcelona to win the UEFA Champions League, four La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey on four occasions.
However, the 31-year-old, who used to be a regular at Barcelona, has made just one start in the 2019-20 season as he has been out of favour with manager Ernesto Valverde.
Rakitic admitted his situation at Barcelona saddens him.
"How can I enjoy it? It's like I've said many times, how does my little daughter feel when you take a toy from here? She feels sad. Well, I feel the same. They took my ball. I feel sad.
"I understand and respect the decisions of the coach or a club or whatever, but I think I've given a lot in these five years and I've been at my peak here. And what I want is to be able to continue enjoying, that is the most important thing for me. I enjoy playing. I'm 31 years old, I'm not 38, and I feel at my best," he said.
