Euro 2020 Qualifiers: Racist cries against Alexander Isak in Romania-Sweden match.
When he came into play in Bucharest on Friday night, as part of the Euro 2020 qualifiers, the Real Sociedad striker was the target of racist cries. The match was stopped briefly.
The Swedish joy of qualifying for Euro 2020 after its victory in Romania on Friday night (2-0) has been tarnished by sad new events. When Sweden's Alexander Isak, of Eritrean origin, was introduced to Marcus Berg in the 78th minute, he was the target of racist cries from the stands.
"I do not let that kind of thing affect me. It's better to ignore them. There will always be idiots, so it's best not to give them the attention they're looking for."
The match was stopped briefly by the referee, and the announcer broadcast a message in the stadium. "I heard a number of racist cries in the stands and asked the referee if he heard what was going on. He had heard nothing, told the Swedish radio the young (20 years old) striker Real Sociedad. A few minutes later, he stopped the game. We had a little discussion, then the game went on and I agree with that. And I'm happy to have won. Obviously, it hurts, it's a shame, but we were prepared for that."
And to add, "I do not let that kind of thing affect me. It's better to ignore them. There will always be idiots, so it's best not to give them the attention they're looking for. "
With one game remaining, Sweden (18 points) are second to Spain (23) in Group F, with both sides having already progressed.
Finland was the other team to book its spot at Euro 2020 on Friday after a 3-0 victory over Liechtenstein, reaching its first major tournament.
Denmark and Switzerland moved closer to qualifying from Group D after wins over Gibraltar and Georgia, respectively.
With 15 points, Denmark tops the group ahead of Switzerland (14) and the Republic of Ireland (12), with all three teams having one game left to play.
