Euro 2020 Qualifiers: England is stronger before the World Cup, says Gareth Southgate.
Gareth Southgate is confident that England will do well in the Euro 2020 finals after finishing top in their qualifying group. England underlined their status as a top seed with a 4-0 win over Kosovo their final Euro 2020 qualifying game. As Group A leader, they will enter the November finals draw in pot one.

England won thanks to goals from Harry Winks, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount. The result meant that England has scored a massive 37 goals in 8 games.

England was the semi-finalist in Russia last summer. Southgate is confident that England is even stronger in the next major tournament in which England will enjoy home advantage at Wembley at least three times.

“I would say that we’re definitely further ahead than we were heading into Russia, but we made massive strides in this period when we went into Russia.

“So, we’ve got to make sure that to get the level of performance next summer, we’re going to have to improve in the way that we did over that spell as well. And I think the team has belief, for sure, you can see the confidence.

“They don’t come into these matches worrying about what might go wrong, they’ve got the confidence to control games with possession and they know they’re going to score goals,” said Southgate.

Southgate added: that by getting top seeds in the draw, they are likely to get a more favourable draw and thus allowing England to control their own destiny as much as possible.

“We’ve got to have some confidence about what we’re doing as well. That said, we’ve got a lot to keep improving on, and we know that. So none of us are complacent in any way, we keep pushing the players for the fine details of the game all the time, and they want that, they’re hungry for that, which is a really good sign for us,” he added.

In the win against Kosovo, Winks and Mount scored their first international goals, while Kane preserved his outstanding record. Goalkeeper Nick Pope also excelled with a clean sheet on his first start and Fikayo Tomori’s international future is now secured after he made a late appearance as a substitute.
